King's papers are being amassed in 14 volumes whose heft and exhaustive coverage don't encourage casual reading. Two editors of that project offer a more manageable book, a set of 11 of King's most frequently preached sermons. They are separately introduced by fellow preachers, all but one of whom (Archbishop Desmond Tutu) knew him, and each appears in a version that was particularly well received (most are transcriptions of recordings, with spoken congregational interjections--" Yes, sir," "That's right," "Preach" --parenthetically inserted in the text). King was a gifted preacher, his staple themes of God's love and social justice are perennially pertinent, and this is thrilling reading, especially if one can conjure his voice in the mind's ear. The sermons have been sound-bitten nearly to death, of course, and in such a manner as to downplay King's staunch evangelical Christianity. Here it blazes forth; indeed, one sermon ends with a clear altar call. Perhaps there is no better way to become acquainted with this great American than this book affords. Ray Olson

Wow! I was born around the time of his death and sadly did not see or hear much about this great American growing up. Then there was a holiday. Then a few more breakthroughs in history with regards to American race relations. Because of the magic of technology this recorded collection puts you right there sitting in the pews up front at the church where this great man preached only the truth. Today you wonder where have our great heroes all gone.The collection of the sermons was truly uplifting and deeply inspirational even 40+ years since his death - still TIMELY! A tear fell from my eye with everyother sermon. The discussions about his sermons were mostly weak, but I didn't mind. Some of the recordings had imperfections and gaps, but I didn't mind.Finally I was saddened by the hate that took his life and robbed us of one of our true American heroes who really fought for all of us. Where would this world be today if we had a fearless voice for the people like him still willing to confront hatred at every turn like Mister Doctor Martin Luther King Junior did? I'm sending copies to intelligent, thoughtful people I know who will appreciate his powerful message. I am now looking to read more about his life so I can only try to understand and better appreciate what he meant to America; then, today, and in the distant future.
When I read these words, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As subjects of this mandate, not as black, white, brown or red, not as colors yet as ordinary people. We have trusted authorities as we toiled and built our wonderful country to do the labor of law; somewhere in that endeavor the truth has been mislaid and greed had it's say, now what a mess we have allowed to be made. Daily I listen to the eloquent words of Dr. King from eight inspiring cd's that if you listen with ears and a heart of forgiveness and a true desire to understand , and become a part of the solution, there is a lesson to be learned.
Rev. King;s efforts to bring justice to our culture were truly epic. Like all prophets, he was murdered in the end. His sermons are powerful, bringing God's words in a way that all can appreciate. This book will be donated to Morrison-Reeves Library in Richmond, IN. When I researched King in their collection I found that the books were old, out of date, and minimal. Rev, King deserves better. Service, as usual with Amazon, was very good.
Fantastic, inspirational read. Spiritual things are timeless and it is a unique "in his own hand" insight into the genius and humanity of the man who transcends the "sound bite" journalistic style we were all fed. Highly recommended.
This is available in an excellent Kindle format. The short introductions to each sermon provide the context and content of the sermons. Nice to have this on Kindle for inspirational reading wherever I am. Martin Luther King, Jr. was very quotable, and some of his phrases stick in my mind for days and days.
It's hard to believe Martin Luther King was 39 when he died. His eloquence can be heard in his famous speeches but the fullness of who he was, his spiritual depth, can be heard only in his sermons. These CDs are inspiring and profoundly moving. He is one of the greatest American preachers of all time and the greatest in the twentieth century.
The books are in great quality and they came when to be expected.
Of course I love it! I bought this because this book has always been one of my favorite books- period. Im not much of a social book reader besides researching but when I do I like spiritual books and this MLK book of sermons gives me encouragement and its really a good book to read for peace of mind and clarity .
