I am definitely feeling the love with Mindy Segal's new book Cookie Love: More Than 60 Recipes and Techniques for Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary. Segal, a self-confessed cookie nerd and proprietor of Chicago's HotChocolate Restaurant and Dessert Bar, is, like me, a huge fan of cookies. I would rather have cookies than any other dessert. So this book definitely called my name.Loaded with mouthwatering color photos, the book is divided into sections based on the various types of cookies:Drop cookiesBar cookiesSandwich cookiesShortbreadThumbprint Cookies, etc.The selection of cookies is unique and varied with recipes for both the novice and seasoned (if you'll pardon the pun) baker. Each recipe is carefully laid out, with detailed instructions that are clear and concise, along with a bit of history, trivia, or author remembrance placed at the beginning of each. Tips and advice to aid you in your baking are included as well.In addition to the recipes on how to make cookies, there are also recipes for how to make ingredients to be used in the cookies, making them truly 100% homemade. These include recipes for sauces, jams, and even jimmies! I was very excited at the prospect of making my own sprinkles, so was pleased to, for the first time ever, have a recipe to teach me how to do just that.Baking tips, suggestions as what to have on hand as staples in your pantry, tricks of the trade, and learning the art of proper measuring, are also included, making this a handy reference guide as well as treasured cookbook.I made the Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oatmeal Scotchies, and Malted Milk Spritz. All of these recipes turned out to be excellent. The Scotchies were a bit sweet and had a trifle more salt than I liked, but a simple notation to cut back on both butterscotch chips and salt content were notated in the margin. The Chocolate Chip recipe, now my "go to," was excellent. The Malted Milk Spritz were a bit of work, but well worth it for the beautiful, bakery shop results. I didn't have the piping tip that she suggested using, so just grabbed a large star tip that I keep on hand for piping pretty much everything and it worked out perfectly. One caveat: there are some unusual and potentially pricey ingredients listed among the recipes. Halva is not something that I keep on hand (though I could make my own) nor is barley syrup, something needed to make the Malted Chocolate Sauce, so I had to forego making this recipe. But only a handful of recipes call for uncommon ingredients and this should not deter you from buying and using the book.I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for this honest review.

This is the most inspirational cookbook I have purchased in years. I've read through it and tried several recipes, and now many of my favorite cookie recipes seem boring and have been displaced by cookies from this book. It's been along time since I've had so much fun in the kitchen. These cookie are standouts, innovative, truly special. Many of the recipes do contain unusual ingredients. Some you'd be able to find at a regular grocery store (e.g., beer nuts, smoked almonds), and most you'd find at a high end grocery store (e.g., smoked sea salt). I did have to order some ingredients, but they've been new discoveries, and I've had a blast experimenting with (and consuming) the likes of smoked sugar, raspberry beer (lambic), and gianduja. Special ingredients make special cookies. My favorites so far are the smoked chocolate sables and PB&J thumbprints. The book inspired me to create my own cookie, which has been a smash success. Some of the recipes are quite simple, others take quite a lot of time. For some of us, the time is enjoyable - that's why it's called cookie LOVE. But whether or not you love the process, you'll love the cookies. Thank you Mindy Segal!

I love this cookbook so much. The recipes I've made so far are all perfect. The best brownie recipe I've ever made in my life is her Barter Brownies. I've made them so many times - they always turn out incredible. Last time we made them, we mixed in crushed peppermint candy canes into the crunchy topping and they were out of this world. My husband won't let me try any other brownie recipe ever again. He says we've found the best - why bother? And a colleague told me the brown butter citrus shortbread are the best shortbread she's ever had. And I'm obsessed with the snickerdoodles - and I usually don't like snickerdoodles! I was a little worried about reviews saying the ingredients are pricey or hard to find, but so far what I've made has been worth it. I have the Kindle version and the navigation is good - all recipes listed/linked to from the side bar. Incredible cookbook!

Not for an amateur baker, Cookie Love is a good book for those who like to experiment. The first one I tried, unfortunately, was a two-day affair. A multi-layered and decorated shortbread called Leopard Print. It was fabulous but the work involved bordered on the insane. The second cookie I tried was the Ode to the Chunky Bar. Unsuccessful and almost inedible. Not sweet or a satisfying or anything like my beloved Chunky. I'll keep plugging away, but so far these cookies have proven to be work that doesn't always work out.

I saw Mindy on a talk show for PBS. She is a smart and intelligent person who loves to not only bake but cook too. I have made only 2 recipes so far and both have received raving reviews from friends and co-workers. This would make a perfect gift for that special person who loves to bake but keep in mind she uses some hard to find ingredients like goat butter for some of her recipes.

Have not been able to make all the cookies yet but the few that I have made are the most amazing cookies i have ever had. The attention to detail in not only the ingredients, but also the instructions makes it almost impossible to not make amazing cookies. This book covers everything from drop cookies, to tea biscuits. There is something in there for everyone.

Very inspirational, keeps you going to the kitchen to cook , another new recipe. The pictures, alone, might satisfy your sweet tooth until you can't wait to make the Kolaches….a really fabulous book

wonderful cookie recipe book, lots of new recipes

Repetitive recipes. Why repeat identical ingredient list and instruction over and over again?Measurements should include weights. Surprising that they are not included given the amount of detail paid to mixing, rolling and baking instructions.Personal peeves. Extra large eggs? Really? Uncommon and unknown ingredients.
