Caitlin Major, creator of Manfried, is a Toronto-based comics writer and illustrator. Her webcomics include Home Sick, Peach Plum Pear, Yer a Witch Milly, and The Spirit and the Spider. Caitlin works as an animation compositor at Skyship Entertainment, an animation studio in Toronto that specializes in kids’ programming.Kelly Bastow is a comics creator and commercial illustrator. She illustrated Quirk Books’ The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy and has drawn for the comics Lumberjanes, Adventure Time, and Capture Creatures. She self-published the graphic novel Wax and Wane (coloring by Caitlin Major), and her 2017 autobiographical comic, Year Long Summer, was nominated for an Ignatz Award.

After reading and loving the first volume, I was overjoyed when I got the chance to review this for Vine. This type of thing is really right up my alley. Plus that cover. I can't help but love the grinning Manfried in the upper left corner, grinning while playing with yarn.I'm not sure exactly how much time has passed since the last volume, but in this one we find that Steve is living the dream... sort of... by working as a cartoonist and dating the cat of his dreams. However at the same time there are issues stemming from Steve having trouble keeping up with the hectic pace of his job and his girlfriend Henrietta is stressed since a corrupt fat cat is threatening to tear down her man shelter. It's up to Steven and Manfried to save the day by winning the Best in Show at the man show.The artwork here is more of what you saw in the first volume. It's colorful and playful and filled to the brim with just adorable artwork of the cats and men. I do somewhat wish that there were women as well as men, just to see what a cute chibi-fied woman would look like as a pet for cats, but I can see why that may prove problematic. Plus it plays into the idea that all cats generally look the same except for their fur length and patterns.Story-wise, this is pretty decent. The potential loss of the shelter drives the volume, but I can also see where there are some story threads being slowly developed for future story lines. They're more hinted at or foreshadowed, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more problems in paradise as far as Steve's life goes. There's a decent resolution to the story, although I do think that this is wrapped up a little too quickly at times. I think that this is likely due to the fact that this book is aimed at a fairly wide range of audiences. There's only so much that the creators can go into without definitively marking this book for a specific age range. Still, it's not anything that would ruin my enjoyment of the book and I definitely love flipping through this after finishing the book to just giggle at specific scenes.
Talking animals interacting in a human dominated world is a common theme but in this graphic novel the authors have created a universe where cats are the ruling class and human men are their pets. The story, Manfried Saves the Day, is completely engaging and the cartoons have a unique style that, like all good cartoons, help convey the mood, emotions along with setting the scene while allowing the actual words to remain minimal. And, although the book is a sequel and I was unfamiliar with Manfried no previous knowledge of the characters is necessary to be captivated by this tale.The cats are flawed, with easily recognizable human traits—like taking on more work than is manageable, having unrealistic goals, in a weak moment falling prey to temptation and making unreasonable demands on others but for the most part they are goodhearted and generous, notwithstanding the requisite bad guy. Great cartoons and I appreciate so much conveyed with an economy of words. Looking forward to the next installment.
This is one of those utterly ridiculous items that I didn't know I had to have until I saw it. Little naked man pets? Big cat owners taking care of them? Men sleeping in a box on a desk while the cat works, men doing tricks for the Manflower Man Show? Yes, yes, & yes! I'm so in!This was a mostly fun read. Some pages were a bit "Meh" but for the most part it was a fun novel way to break up my reading.This type of nonsense is the sort of thing I'd be thrilled to receive as a gift.One thing I don't care for is the ink used. The smell is ghastly. It really could use a good airing out.If you know someone with a totally silly sense of humor (maybe you?) who also loves/owns cats, they (you?) are sure to enjoy this goofy comic as much as I did (unless they/you have multiple chemical sensitivities - then run screaming).
Manfried is a cute small man in this splendid graphic novel “Manfried saves the Day†in which roles are reversed. In the tale, cats are tall, think and act like humans, with human problems, while humans are small seemingly unthinking pets who act, jump, eat, and sleep like our cats, but instead of saying “meow,†they say “hey.†The book works as a nice story and as a thought-provoking satire. Manfried’s owner, Steve Catson, runs a Pet Shelter where stray men can be adopted by loving cats. He spoils lazy Manfried who acts just like our cats act. Steve has a loving girlfriend Henrietta. Steve brings home a stray man named Garfield who becomes Manfried’s roommate, much to his dislike.One day, Steve is told that his building is being sold and will be torn down. Steve needs to find a way to save his shelter. Manfried becomes his inspiration.
If you have ever owned a cat, then you will enjoy the flip of who is the pet and who is the owner. In this storyline, Manfried is a man who lives like a cat. He does all the annoying and cute things that cats do. The crux of the story is that the man shelter may have to move because a fat cat wants to develop the land and he bribed the council cats to get his way. The shelter holds a man show and everything gets exposed and Manfried wins the title. The shelter is saved and all live happily ever after.
Caught a few Manfred clips on the net and thought they were an amusing premise so I was really looking forward to a full length graphic novel.Ugh! This was so self-important and boring I couldn’t believe it! Saving a man-shelter? And all that do-Gooder nonsense was tiresome because it has been beaten to death by sitcoms and after school specials since the 50’s.If you must check it out from the library and save your money for something that is actually enjoyable.
I was surprised to see another graphic novel about Manfried; I had actually read another in the past. It's pretty good stuff - you can sort of guess at a lot of the humor, but it manages to be pretty clever as well. Art is interesting and the book is a really nice one, physically (i.e., good stock both inside and cover). Worth a look for any Manfried, cat, or comic fan.
