From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-With a format that combines large, bright photos and brief text, these books provide basic introductions to world countries. Each titles opens with maps that locate the country and its most important cities and then touches on its history and flag, geography, economy, culture, most famous people, and more. "Tour Book" sections suggest places to visit and things to do and "Up Close" pages list basic facts. The attractive, well-captioned photos are the strongest elements of the set, but don't fully compensate for the text that is limited to only a few sentences per page. Overgeneralization, superficial coverage, and an annoying overuse of exclamation points will further limit this set's usefulness to report writers; it should be considered as an additional purchase where picture-heavy books to aid developing readers are in demand. α(c) Copyright 2013. This is a basic book about Japan for young readers and young travelers. It gives young readers an understanding of Japan in broad brush strokes. It is not meant to delve into WWII at any great length. I interpret this book as whet the appetite and help travelers become curious about this country to learn more. My guess is aged 9 and up who may be going to Japan with family might enjoy this basic book. Dont buy it if you're looking for Frommer's or Fodor's or the like as it's not that kind of book!

This book elevates Hirohito to that of a benevolent leader. It depicts Japanese involvement in WWII as simply present, with an emphasis on the US dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while completely ignoring Pearl Harbor, Bataan, Rape of Nanking. The section regarding Hirohito would have the reader believe that the Japanese people rebuilt their country after their "surrender." This book is not accurate and even would have the reader believe that the only people who died in WWII as far as Japan is concerned were the 100K people in Hisroshima and Nagasaki. Even the Timeline that shows the sailing of Admiral Perry is unfit because, AGAIN, it only shows one side - nothing about the American merchants and sailor, shipwrecked and detained by the Japanese government and the slaughter of Christian missionaries by Japan during this time. This book does not belong in any library, much less as a children's book.
