I have read the reviews posted so far and I really didn't expect much and was mainly interested in today's cultural trends in the Ukraine, rather than in the book itself. It took some time to get used to the language of the book and its flow but after a while it became an easy and very enjoyable read. One has to imagine she is actually "saying it", not writing it. The translation is masterful and I can only imagine the effort it took. The book is slightly chaotic and uneven, but I think it is intentional. It has brilliant insights into human nature and life in both parts of the world, the US and the newly liberated Ukraine. The exuberant and (purposefully?) tasteless sexuality of the book didn't bother me much but I could certainly do without it. By the end of the book it seemed to me that the author got stuck and didn't know how to end it. There was a quasi-sermon about the need of love, a motive that went nowhere.Generally, the book can be called a "mixed bag" but I think the "mixed bag" idea is simply a portrayal of human nature. The author has SERIOUS talent, FANTASTIC intelligence and she is not afraid to be SENSITIVE in the old-fashioned way. I am ordering her second book.

I wanted to read this unique book because my now wife is from Eastern Europe & I thought it might give me a better understanding of where she was from. As I saw from previous reviews it is somewhat challenging to read. If you can get through the first of it toward the ending I think you get a feel for what the writer was trying to project. A rather depressing life which is true for a lot of people in these countries.

I disliked this book intensely. I thought the whole novel was rambling and whiny, and contained no coherence at all. I also disliked her dismissal of Penn State Unversity as a horrible place. I live near it, and here in central Pennsylvania, it is highly regarded as an excellent institution of higher learning and research. If it were possible to give it negative stars, I would. (I constantly read international literature and speak several languages, so I am not some uneducated yokel (as she implies about the residents of our area) who knows nothing about international literature or issues.)

The translation by Halyna Hryn (and for the effort it must have cost) deserves five stars.Otherwise, this is an appalling novel by a self-absorbed, drama-seeking, masochistic, narcissistic female who revels in her victimhood, rather than seeking to use her past to overcome it.

"Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex" has no plot to describe. We meet the narrator, Oksana, in her kitchen contemplating suicide. Over the course of the book's 160 pages we backtrack into a variety of (there's a temptation to say random, which may not be fair) life experiences. She reflects on a failed relationship, her parents, career, travels and homeland - the history, culture, and people. As the narrator jumps back and forth in time from topic to topic, frequently in the style of a lecture, the reader struggles to follow and discern the meandering, tangle of thought. The narrative is an extreme example of stream of consciousness writing. The sentences (using the term loosely) run on for pages at a time, with parenthetical inside parenthetical inside... Well, you get the idea. Lacking any foundation, which plot may have provided, we are left with the random musings and reflections of the narrator. Because they are frequently intensely personal and, frankly, so very dark and desperate, the experience teeters on the brink of futility. The author is a poet of some renown and poetical excerpts liberally sprinkle the text. The characteristics one associates with poetry also dominate the prose, an over-reliance on imagery as well as the aforementioned lack of formal sentence structure. One might argue whether this is an innovative and perhaps brave new direction for prose or whether it is simply a lack of discipline on the part of the author. I personally wondered whether I would grow accustomed to the style and embrace it given time. Instead, my patience wore thin trying to unravel the never-ending sentences.I applaud the author for the honest and intimate self-reflection and the depth of thought. There are interesting ideas on feminism, love, and particularly Ukrainian culture (is a Ukrainian literary work doomed to obscurity by its very nature?). Unfortunately, they are fleeting references, seeds of ideas, rather than anything more substantial. The narrator's introspection and contemplativeness, though admirable, are tainted by melodrama and underpinned by a strong fatalism. It can be debated whether that is an inevitable outcome of who she is as woman and Ukrainian. She would argue that is so. I hope she's wrong.

Typically stream of consciousness writing is not my cup of tea and I struggled with the book in this respect. Nevertheless a pick for me, because some of the writing while harsh is beautiful... so harsh content but beautiful writing. I am not surprised that this book was considered revolutionary at the time and still is.

I have kept wanting to like this book. It was first published in the Ukraine in 1996 & was a best seller there for ten years. The author is one of the few people who writes exclusively in Ukrainian & makes a living from her writing. I have started this book & put it back down & gone back to it numerous times. The title is very enticing. The back cover says it unleashed a storm of controversy when first published. Ostensibly, it's about a female poet in the Ukraine who has a penchant for falling for the wrong men. She is an intellectual & her mind always knows what is best for her & she can see disaster coming, but still she goes for wrong men, even those who physically & emotionally & sexually abuse her. But, the writing is very dense. This is definitely not a page turner. You need to invest your time & your intellectual energy & curiosity & patience in reading this book. Then again, I felt the same way about Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" so others might be enthralled with this book.
