About the Author
Hew Strachan (winner of the 2016 Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing) is the Chichele Professor of the History of War and a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford University. The editor of The Oxford History of the First World War, he is writing a three-volume history of the First World War, the first volume of which was published in 2001 to wide acclaim.

As a university professor who specializes in WWI, I can say without reservation that this is the single most brilliant and important book about the subject written in any language since November 11, 1918. Any serious student of the subject must start here, as there is simply nothing comparable in scope and rigor than Strachan's work. I eagerly await the next volumes.
The author has evolved the famous 'Fog of War' into a 'Fog Of The History of War'. The First World War is a subject I enjoy reading about most of the time, but I felt strangely removed from the story when attempting this volume. I cannot recommend this book as an introductory account of the war and I think I would avoid it for subsequent reading. There is a good bit of interesting material within its pages, but do not expect to find it easily. Certainly do not expect to finish the book with a clear understanding of the war. A far better history is Martin Gilbert's 'The First World War: A Complete History'.It is fair to give just one example of the difficulty I had with this book. On page 35 there is a section headlined: "Germany's Guilt?" It was an odd place for this discussion, near the beginning of the book, but odder still was that the question asked is never truly addressed in what follows. Mention is made that both sides began at once with propaganda accusing the other for starting the war, but 'Germany's Guilt?', which looks like a question is not addressed much less answered. Yet, this is an important question that should have been addressed more fully.My own thought is that the question of 'guilt' is answered in two parts, who is most responsible for starting the war and who was more barbaric in its conduct. There can be little question that Austria and Germany were spoiling for a fight. Well before the Sarajevo assassination Europe approached the brink by the preparations and the actions of the Teutons. There were attempts in Germany to avoid war, but the will to war was greater. Germany and Austria caused the war. The Central Power's conduct of the war was barbaric. Austria committed outrages against civilians in Serbia that should still shock. Germany behaved like a barbarian horde in neutral Belgium and parts of occupied France. Germany also introduced bombing of civilian centers in England by zeppelin and aircraft, and Germany used the infamous Paris Gun to lob shells indiscriminately into Paris, killing civilians and destroying buildings with no possibility of gaining a tactical or strategic advantage. Germany brought its battle cruisers to the shores of England to fire upon villages like Scarborough, murdering a few civilians, but accomplishing nothing to further their war aims. Turkey, of course, conducted mass murder on Armenians. Strachan covers much of this, but not in a way that is very illuminating.There are much better histories of the First World War.
I am giving the book 5 stars just so I don't prejudice the evaluation of the actual content, but my review is for the Kindle version. Don't buy it! It is a collosal mess. Most importantly it is not sequenced correctly. I was reading about the Schlieffen Plan in "War Plans". Suddenly I was reading about the Battle of the Marne. I thought it odd that such a comprehensive book didn't cover the French, Russian, or British war plans. I went back to the table of contents and entered the text again from there and, sure enough, I got to the text covering all war plans. This has happened repeatedly.The scanning is awful, especially dropping the letter "f". So you find --.....whatever the inancial burden (location 943)...... after the lirtation with Germany (location 945)In the process it abandoned the evenness of the ive year plan (location 5583)There are dozens of typos like this in the first few sections.Also, reading the run up to the Battle of the Marne I suddenly find a General "Bölow" in charge of one of the German armies, fighting Lanrezac.. Was there a General Bölow? Not that I have ever heard of. It must be a typo for Bülow.This level of mistake and disarray is really intolerable. The Kindle version is a confusing mess. Don't buy it!
If you're looking for safe, main-stream consensus, Strachan is your man. He sums up the several parties and their fronts and there is nothing wrong with that. The entire book reflects military history and little else. For my purposes I was looking for mainstream views on Hoover's Belgian Relief efforts and some background on the endeavour. However, it is not to be found, at least not in this volume. His treatment of the suspension of the gold standard looks like a copy paste from other mainstream sources. I take it he is no specialist and I don't blame him for that. I know how much time it took me to specialise. Maybe I find what I am looking for in volume 2, if I can find that...
I have the kindle edition and use the 6" reader. As such, studying maps and photographs is nearly impossible. On one page their might be half a dozen countries and their ever changing alliances mentioned, so the reader has to juggle a lot of facts in his mind. But I keep on reading, and am amazed at the roots of present European politics that trace back to over one hundred years ago. The author seems to have had access to vast quantities of information as he drills down in many facets of WWI. Recommended for all who study modern warfare and geopolitics.
