Great book, great writing, looking for more books from this author.
I really enjoy aviation stories and period adventure stuff like the Indiana Jones films and this melds those two really well. It moves at a pretty good clip with a lot of charming characters, particularly the drunk monkey. Even the villain is oddly likeable while still being quite sinister.The narration in it is different from what I'm normally used to. Parts of it have the sound of a set description for a film production. It sort of almost present tense but not quite. But I also ran into that going through the novel Ben Hur and that's considered a classic so I guess that makes this a classic.I am certainly looking forward to finishing the rest of my reading queue so I can circle back and go through this one again.
I often judge books by how they make me feel or if I can see them as a film. I can judge this book on both those points. The entire time I was reading, I was immersed in the lush island world that became so vividly clear by the development of the locations and by the richness of the characters, including the planes which felt like characters all their own. I am an avid traveler, and this adventure story kept me intrigued and dying to know what would happen next and what the characters would discover or encounter next. So, it made me feel excited and alive, ready to chase another adventure of my own. And, I started casting the film version in my head. That drunk monkey will be the big challenge!
I mostly read adventure flying non-fiction (Sky Beyond, Wind Sand Stars, The Few etc.) but find this book to be such a fun page turner. I am a commercial pilot with seaplane endorsements and find the references to the flying boats great. This book is a blend of Indiana Jones and Dirk Pitt; if that’s in your wheelhouse, pick this book up! Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a fun adventure read. Would make a great series...
