One of the great philosophical questions through the ages has been the nature and substance of time. In the very first chapter, “About Timeâ€, Banville poses the question, “When does the past become the past?†It provides, in many ways, the rhetorical theme that unifies what is otherwise part memoir, part guidebook, part picture book, and part social and geo-political commentary.As a result, there is a lot of timely reflection: “The process of growing up is, sadly, a process of turning the mysterious into the mundane.†It even infiltrates the description, as in, “…cups of tea the colour of tree trunks sunk for centuries in swamp-water.â€Banville takes us on a magical journey through his life and Dublin both, providing just enough detail to make it informative, but not so much that it ever bogs down. Throughout the journey, moreover, you are sure to have a smile on your face. At one point, he asks, “Do I imagine it, or am I right in thinking that the English can never quite take the Irish seriously? When I am over there I have the impression that everyone I speak to is just about managing to keep a straight face.†I am not English, but I know I read the whole book on the brink of a good chuckle.The writing itself is very witty and very accessible. When comparing the statues of Paris and Ireland, for example, he notes, “In Ireland we tend to erect tremendous plinths and set upon them tiny figurines, our aspirations to gloire seeming to falter at an ascending rate. In Paris, however, those vast stone figures confront us imperiously, overwhelming in their scale, their grandeur, their vividness.â€There are plenty of colorful references to other Irish writers and poets. He refers, for example, to Irish poet, Patrick Kavanagh, as a “crusty old codger,†but without a trace of disrespect. And he notes about Joyce: “For me, as a writer in the making, the fact was that Joyce had seized upon the city [Dublin] for his own literary purposes and in doing so had used it up, as surely as Kafka did with the letter K, and consequently the place was of no use to me as a backdrop for my fiction.â€And while there’s a whiff of adolescent naughty here and there, although it hardly qualifies as even that by today’s standards, there’s not a single expletive in the whole book. The prose is crisp and sharp but never in your face.All told, it’s a delightful stroll through both time and Dublin, although I suspect the author would dislike the “delightful†part. His prose is more creative but straight on. Not quite bare knuckle, if you will, but definitely written with a mischievous twinkle in the eye that i can't hope to match.It’s a quick read and you won’t find a better way to spend an afternoon. So while it’s not transformative in the way we normally use that word, it will transform your day and that deserves a 5 in my book.
A talented writer, now at the doorsteps of old age, considers old Dublin, a city he knows well, and the steady, unsettling passage of time. The book is enhanced by the presence of many poignant photographs--shot by Paul Joyce--that closely follow and compliment Mr. Banville's words.This a memoir, and, therefore, highly personal; it is not a full history of this great Irish city.If you are interested in John Banville or simply would like to read about some the inhabitants and locales of Dublin, with suitable atmospherics, this is a book to purchase.
Banville calls this a pseudo-memoir which is about right. He reminisces about his childhood and his trips into Dublin as a youth and intersperses those recollections with current wanderings around the city with some of his pals. If you don't have a connection with the city much of what he has to say will go over your head. But like any Banville book its more about the journey than the destination. His thing is writing beautiful sentences that morph into paragraphs and eventually into a book; that skill is more than evident here. Would I recommend it? Sort of. For a non-Dubliner I think its best to just read the words and not pay much attention to what he's writing about. A last observation: there are photographs included in the book so it would make sense to buy it in hardcover. But this is not a coffee-table photo book. If you are expecting lots of artistic shots of Dublin presented in large- format style you will probably be disappointed but the photos do add something and are quite nice in a low key way.
This is a reflective, meandering book. In his early seventies, Banville still has an intense recall of how he reacted to Dublin as a country boy from a modest family in Wexford and as he grew into a young man and then an adult. Now, an established and world traveling successful author, he still savors the many things that make this city special. I've only spent a few days in his fabled city, but I have read some of the books that weave its real and imagined characters into the fabric of the place. So my local geography is a bit fuzzy. Perhaps, if you know the city better, it might enhance your enjoyment of his book, but I still found it engaging without reaching for a city map.There are at least three layers here. One a perhaps largely but selectively cribbed account of more remote history that explains and highlights the significance of older buildings and neighborhoods inevitably changed over the course of time. He does bring to life some of the successful and some notorious people who crafted Dublin's cityscape. A more personalized account of the author's interaction with the city at different stages in his life is populated with colorful vignettes of famous and not so famous people he either interacted with or wished he had. Thirdly, and most enjoyably, is the author's nostalgia for an unrequited love of his youth, a crisp portrait of his unattainable young lady and her quirky family. Also, in that lens is an account of more recent wanderings around the city looking at places that had an intense but brief place in his personal journey in the city or discovering "new" old things about the metropolis.At a similar age, I recognize how the mind retains and amplifies those minor adventures who make us who we are. Banville does a fine job of telling his story-for those who are willing to listen.
