About the Author
Bruce E. Levine is a regular contributor to CounterPunch, Truthout, Z Magazine, AlterNet, Salon, and the Huffington Post. He is a practicing clinical psychologist often at odds with the mainstream of his profession, and he is on the editorial advisory board of the journal Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry and on the scientific advisory board of the National Center for Youth Law. A longtime activist in the mental health treatment reform movement, he is a member of the International Society for Ethical Psychology & Psychiatry. His books include Get Up, Stand Up; Surviving America's Depression Epidemic; and Commonsense Rebellion.

This was a truly enlightening book for me. I started reading it and immediately realized he was describing me exactly. He mentioned how some kids are willing to speak out against injustices in school, and tend to speak out rather than remain silent. The majority stay mum and refuse to speak out even when they know something isn't right. I have always wondered why I am not afraid to do this. Yes, being truthful and vocal will certainly get you into a lot of trouble and it isn't the best way to make friends. Telling the truth is risky. Reading this book validates the importance of anti-anthoritarians. We are vital to society. I am proud that I dared to say something, and proud that I continue to do so. I plan to send a copy of this wonderful book to a relative of mine, too.
. . before reading. The Author presents many examples to illustrate the difference between Anti-Authority and Anti-Authoritarian. The best examples throughout American history are also the best researched, and political figures. The Author makes it clear that although the examples once were fully accepted by established Authority Systems, once they deviated from the Group think, they were marginalized.The Author also presents a level of HOPE for those finding themselves marginalized in today's Authoritarian society. He presents what has allowed those marginalized in the past cope with their situations. This is very important as it is exactly what is missing from much of society, today.

Levine's book is an exploration of many anti-authoritarians throughout history who have fought back against inhumanity, injustice, and blind conformity, often much to their own demise. In a sense, it is a sort of resistance handbook. He illustrates how politicians, teachers, and mental health professionals perpetuate and demand obedience and adherence to the status quo at all costs. And the costs have been many. He derides the many abuses of authority over the last century and, particularly, the ways in which the mental health field has and does perpetuate injustice and oppression. This coming from a psychologist! He describes himself as a person who does not have problems with authority, but, rather, just with those in power who don't know what they're talking about.This book is a refreshing act of dissent in itself and can provide hope for many who are feeling hopeless and angry in a time that authoritarianism seems to be on the rise. Highly recommended for anyone looking for support, inspiration, and/or direction in resisting and fighting back against unjust authority.
I will admit that I am only on page 29. But I have read Bruce Levine's others book THE DEPRESSION EPIDEMIC (another MUST READ) and already I am so energized by the subject matter. Bruce Levine really gets to the core of what is wrong with our society!! He GETS IT!.I highly recommend all of his books.. and I will update my review later on as I read more into this but already it has energized me merely on the significance of the subject matter!!. These are dark times. Delicate times. We have to be reminded about these issues lest we repeat them!.I know that some on the Right believe that somehow Trump is being the a"anti establishment" president but if you really look into it.. he is just another version of an establishment president. He is very much a bully and praises authoritarian dictatorships and ways of political rule. He is supportive of bully cops and authoritarian regimes.. just because he says he is "against" the "deep state" doesn't mean a thing. He is just another face of the same old thing. Yet so many are fooled by this. FAR too many. People that would be willing to kill and fight and beat up anyone HE said to fight or kill or beat up!. Just watch his rallies.. This is a must read book!. Thank you Bruce Levine for another wonderful and essential book that addresses critical issues during these dark and dangerous times!!!
